Where electric-unit leaks actually come from

The same places as any heater — top fittings, valves, the tank shell — plus the element ports. Each element screws or bolts into the tank with a gasket seal; thermal cycling and age harden that gasket until it weeps, usually down inside the jacket, so the water again appears at the base. The giveaway is rust and moisture concentrated at an access panel rather than spread evenly.
