Signs this is your leak
- Top fittings look wet or green-crusted — corrosion bloom at the inlet or outlet nipples
- Water at the base but the shell is dry — the puddle arrived from above, traveling down
- Damp insulation under the top cover — a slow leaker that has been going a while
- Leak changes with water use — pressure shifts open and close a marginal joint
Why connections start leaking
Heat cycles expand and contract joints thousands of times over a heater's life. Dielectric nipples corrode where copper meets steel. Flexible connectors age out. A joint that was dry for eight years can start weeping in the ninth — and because the water travels inside the jacket, the visible evidence shows up a full tank-height away from the actual fault.
The repair — and the catch
We dry the unit, run it, and watch the top connections first. Repaired early, a connection leak is a fitting replacement. The catch is time: a top leak left dripping soaks insulation, rusts the shell it touches, and can turn a cheap fix into a tank problem. If your base is wet, do not assume the worst — but do not wait either.
