A brown ring on the ceiling has two possible authors — the roof above it or the plumbing inside the ceiling — and they need entirely different trades. Paying a roofer for a plumbing leak (or the reverse) is the most avoidable waste in home repair. The evidence usually tells the story if you read it in order.

Weather correlation first: mark the stain's edge and watch it through a dry week of normal bathroom use, then through rain. Fixture isolation second: if the ceiling sits below a bathroom, stop using one fixture at a time — the shower is the most common culprit, its drain and valve hidden exactly where the stain appears. Activity third: an active drip with the house dry and fixtures idle means pressurized plumbing until proven otherwise.
If the evidence says plumbing, we trace and repair the source — that is our side. If it says roof, you need a roofer, and we will tell you so honestly rather than sell you a search. Either way, water already in the ceiling means drying matters: trapped moisture feeds mold long after the drip stops.

Not definitely. Storms also mean long showers, guests and full baths. Check the correlation over two or three events, and whether the stain sits directly below a fixture. Pattern beats a single data point.
After the source is fixed and the material is dry, stain-blocking primer exists for exactly this. Painting over an active leak seals moisture in and evidence out — the worst order of operations.
An active drip through a ceiling gets prompt attention: water is inside structure and often near wiring. Bucket under it, avoid the light fixtures on that ceiling, and get the source traced.
